Now, I’m not sure how many will know who Aknot is, but let’s just say I enjoyed making the ink card (5″ x 7″, ink on 140 lb. Cold Press as usual) and leave it at that.
Ok, I guess I can let you know. Aknot is a warrior/creature that appears in the wildly underrated film The Fifth Element. I thought he would be a fun creature to try, and one that’s a bit more challenging.
I think there are two parts to that challenge. First, whenever I start these inks I always prefer to have a solid, sharp place to start at. Im-Ho-Tep’s eye for example, or Pacal’s sharp nose. But with Aknot, there aren’t really any sharp parts, so the challenge was to get my mind past the need for one.
Secondly, Aknot is a very organic creature, there aren’t a lot of areas where the contrast will make it easy to create. There are also a lot of areas where there are wrinkles, and combined the inks still have to give a sense of texture, a sense that this isn’t a flat plane. It has to live, not be static like many other creatures.
Whether I succeeded or not is up to you fine folks. By all means, please let me know. As with all of the ink cards, if you REALLY like it, it’s for sale.
